What entrepreneur do you admire?

In our ice-breaker introductory session of Entrepreneurial Strategies, students identified entrepreneurs whom they admire. The list included Warren Buffett, Richard Branson, WWE founder Vince McMann (!), Bill Gates, Henry Ford, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Interestingly, several students admired Chris Gardner (the protagonist of The Pursuit of Happyness) as a model entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs are quite distinct from managers in the personal practices and mindset they assume: entrepreneurs set the work climate, engage in opportunity-seeking behaviors, and constantly strive for new insights to move their ventures forward (McGrath & MacMillan, 2000). That "venture" can be your team's project, your start-up company, or even your career (Mr. Gardner is the gentleman on the left).

Google, Facebook, Yahoo, and Microsoft share more than multibillion dollar valuations. These technology titans have another striking resemblance: They were all founded by university students.

While the frequency with which new young multimillionaires are minted may have decreased since the technology bubble, a more lasting trend in student entrepreneurship is now on the rise. Dorm rooms across the country are abuzz with creative business ideas that may lay the groundwork for a paradigm shift in the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Facebook, YouTube, and Aggieland

Texas A&M University just launched a new microsite to let students post YouTube-style videos showing what life as an Aggie is all about. The site, along with a new Facebook profile, is part of a university marketing campaign called "Do You Wonder?"

According to Wired contributor Paul Boutin, "Thinking about launching your own blog? Here's some friendly advice: Don't. And if you've already got one, pull the plug." I still think that a private blog is a good way to share and comment on course information, though I'm always willing to try something new.
